Catholic Apostle Chalice Iron Large Romanesque Goblet Skull Romanesque Medieval Austrian
ROMANESQUE CHALICE
This extremely unusual eucharistic chalice appears to be a large cup in the early Medieval or Romanesque model, with Greco-Roman style handles, and a full array of the 12 apostles depicted in a really charming early form. It is a top quality replica of a famous sacred chalice from an Austrian abbey treasury.
This is a replica of the Communion chalice from St. Peter's Abbey in Salzburg to 1160/80 AD, made for thee The Austrian art history department at the Vienna World Exhibition (Exposition des amateurs) Vienna World Exhibition 1873
The outside rim is engraved with the following latin inscription:Prescia priscorum suspirant vota virorum
ut sacer hic sanguis restauret quod negat anguisor "The prescient prayers of ancient men sigh,
that this sacred blood may restore what the snake denies"
The metal of this chalice is iron or steel, manufactured in mid nineteenth century Europe. When kept clean and oiled it looks like a dull silver alloy or even pewter. I have given it a careful clean and polish and its looking great. The amusing skull of the stem is carved from a tightly finely grained wood and is probably a later addition.
Dimensions: Height 22 cm or 8.7", 20 wide or 8", and 25 cm inc handles or 10". almost 2.5 kg weight.
Condition: some small traces of rust and corrosion here and there. One side element of one handle is missing a leaf, but its hard to notice without very close inspection.
Shipping: Please note that shipping takes the size and weight into account, we do our best to do the best by our customers and ship at cost.
